This year\u00a0Setsubun<\/em><\/a> falls on February 3rd. Setsubun<\/em> is a traditional part of the Japanese lunar calendar celebrating the start\u00a0of Spring. \u00a0As part of a cleansing ritual, fukumame<\/em> (lucky roasted soy beans) are scattered first outside, then inside one’s home to clear any misfortune from the previous year and welcome in good fortune. \u00a0The phrase accompanying this varies throughout Japan, but what I learned and practice is : \u00a0“Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi<\/em>” (demons out, fortune in).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After scattering them, you may also\u00a0choose to\u00a0eat as many fukumame<\/em> as your age to ensure good fortune for the coming year. If you’re well into adulthood, like me, remember to plan ahead so you still have enough leftover to eat\ud83d\ude09.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another more modern tradition is to\u00a0eat eh\u014dmaki<\/em> (lucky sushi roll). Don’t forget you must eat it without cutting it, in silence, and while facing the lucky direction (eh\u014d<\/em>). The eh\u014d<\/em> changes yearly according to the zodiac and indicates the position of the New Year’s god Toshitokujin<\/em>, who oversees the year’s fortune. \u00a02026 is the year of the fire horse, and the lucky direction is south-southeast. It’s said that if you follow the three rules, the wish you make in your heart while eating it will be granted!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
