The sakura (Japanese cherry) trees are blooming! Let’s hanami (go flower-viewing) at one (or all) of the many spectacular spots in and around Matsue.

This year’s Matsue Castle Festival is from March 25th-April 8th (link in Japanese only), during which the castle and its grounds are lit up until 9pm. You can take in the delicate beauty of the sakura blossoms among seasonal lanterns, and there are special performances, live music, and additional events on the weekends.

Situated on a hill, about a 15 minute walk from the castle, is Senjyuin Temple (link in Japanese only) and its iconic, 250-year-old, “weeping” sakura. A tunnel of sakura line the way leading to the temple grounds from which you can enjoy sweeping views of the city and castle.

The Tamatsukuri Onsen district on the south side of Lake Shinji is also host to a Sakura Festival (link in Japanese only) from March 27th to April 19th. Enjoy a picturesque view of sakura along the Tamayu River by day, or illuminated in the evenings from 6-9pm.

About an hour outside of Matsue, are the famous sakura of Unnan City (ranked among the 100 best viewing spots in Japan!). The main event of this year’s Sakura Festival (link in Japanese only) is on April 4th and 5th, near the 2 km-long “cherry blossom tunnel” along the Hii River in Kisuki. However, there are eight(!) other amazing spots in this area with different varieties of sakura that bloom from the end of February through April!

I chose to incorporate some logos from Avengers and Spiderman into the pumpkin I carved this year.

Happy Halloween!

HALL🎃WEEN is coming!!

flapper

For the past six years, I’ve posted about my childhood Halloween costumes.  Here is a picture from when I was in third grade.  My mother made the Roaring Twenties costume, complete with lots of fringe and beads💜.  I think I made a pretty stylish flapper😉

As in previous years, Port Below is hosting a Halloween event.  This year, the event is on Saturday, the 26th of October at 8:30pm!!

Summertime☀️

Whew! It’s really gotten hot and humid in Matsue. Last week was the Tenjin Matsuri (every year throughout Japan on the 24th and 25th of July). We went on the evening of the 25th, so we didn’t see the mikoshi, which happened on the 24th. We did however see traditional dancing within the Shinto shrine!

The Summer festivals in Japan are a great distraction from the hot weather😁. Being at the Tenjin Matsuri reminded me of the 4th of July celebrations I got to partake in when I visited my hometown: Ashland, Oregon! It was my first 4th of July experience in a very long time, and it was just as fun as I remembered from when I was a child💜. Below are some pictures from the 4th of July parade, which people from allover come to see!

2019 Horan-Enya

The third of the big boats from Ooi village

It was overcast on Saturday’s Horan-Enya as the boats escorting the Jozan Inari Shrine from the grounds of Matsue Castle headed for Adakaya Shrine in Higashi Izumo.

The second of the big boats from Yada village

When the boats and the shrine retuned on the following Sunday, after 7 days of prayers for a good harvest in Higashi Izumo, the weather was spectacular!
